Gouritsmond is a quiet seaside village situated at the mouth of the Gourits River on the Garden Route of the Western Cape. The Gourits River is the principal river in the Southern Cape. Gouritsmond is centrally situated between Cape Town and Knysna, making it an ideal base from which to visit many of the popular tourist attractions in the area.
Activities in Gouritsmond include Fishing, whereby there are some very famous fishing spots known as "The Fisheries", "Bull Point" and "KaapVacca". Here keen anglers will catch leervis, white steenbras, kob, gunter, and elf. The kabeljou will sometimes swim into the estuaries to feed on the mullet. The area is perfect for powerboat fishermen and a launch ramp is available.
At Gouritsmond swimming is safe but the tide can sometimes be a bit dangerous, so visitors should be careful! Gouritsmond is close to Mossel Bay, where visitors can go for their shopping at the big supermarkets and shopping malls.
The Gouritsmond beach is ideal for swimming, surfing, sun bathing or just strolling to the river mouth. A few things of interest to look out for are the Fynbos, kiewiete (Cape plover) and the endangered black oyster catcher. For those who enjoy a good hike, there is a unique coastal walking trail from Mossel Bay (through Gourits) to Gourikwa Nature Reserve.
Camping is a popular form of accommodation in Gouritsmond. At the Gourits Rivier Mond (Gourits river-mouth) there is a caravan park, a camping site, and a hotel.
